just thought of something. the price of meat in woolies doesnt make sense.
we needed chicken breast, so we went over to the cold section, obviously thinking buyng the bulk packs would be cheaper. well.. it was cheaper to buy 8fillets than 2, by about $2/kg - it was only $14/kg to get the bulk pack. which i thought was absolutely ridiculous, seeing as everywhere else chicken was only 12/kg.
so we wandered over to the deli section, where they also sell chicken, seafood, and sausages, and guess what? $11/kg.
i guess packaging really cost them a lot, if they have to raise prices by up to $5/kg just to cover it...

Yep, it's like that all the time at my local Woolies too.
What bothers me about the prepacked breasts is that you can never tell what the underside looks like. More often than I can count we've taken a fillet out of the pack at home to find the underside completely covered in fat and goobers (that's our word for anything gross...not to be confused with 'boogers' which only come from one spot - which incidentally isn't chicken, LOL). The deli counter generally has cheaper prices and sometimes can be a better option because you can buy just what you need (ie, one at a time...not that I've done that, but hey...) And you can do the Goober Check while you're at it.
When I'm on the ball though, I like to buy 12-20 fillets at a time from the chicken butcher about 5 min drive away (like Lenard's...but called Fresh n Easy). Prices are far cheaper than supermarket and its not uncommon for it to get as low as $8 kilo on special. Reg price is good too at $9 or $10 a kilo. Compared to (like you said) Woolies reg price of $14-$15 a kilo. Makes a LOT of difference to the bottom line...
Cheers,
Lizzie
8/kg?? cheap here is 10/kg.. and i havent seen that for a couple months. chicken went up about 1/kg a little while ago and its been hovering around the 12/kg mark everywhere.. but then i ahvent seen a chicken-only-butcher anywhere.. maybe thats it.
the fillets tend to be bigger at the butcher than they are in woolies too. i couldnt believe it when 4 fillets weighed less than 500g.
